Moving Towards the Regional Approach

Water and Sanitation Program-South Asia of the World Bank has
published a Report on ‘Implementing Integrated Solid Waste Management
Systems in India: Moving Towards the Regional Approach’ in December
2007. A brief of that document is summarized and reproduced below:
Introduction
The
report is intended for decision-makers who are concerned with
reducing pollution and health hazards that are caused by uncontrolled
disposal of thousands of tons of waste daily in open dumps. It
will also be helpful for decision-makers who are concerned with
urban governance and urban management.There
is considerable concern about compliance deadlines of the Municipal
Solid Waste Rules of 2000 which have not been met, more so since
major allocations of financial assistance are being allocated
under the Twelfth Finance Commission and JNNURM. There are many
challenges regarding the safe disposal of municipal solid waste
in India.
Recent
attempts have been concerned with finding ways to provide safe
and sanitary disposal for solid waste so that environment is no
longer damaged by polluting open dumps. The general overview in
the report suggests that while efforts are being made to improve
collection and transportation, the situation with regard to treatment.
And
disposal of solid waste in India is still unsatisfactory with
much remaining to be done. In this context the ‘Regional Approach’
in the report on waste treatment and disposal suggested along
with such practices proposed to be adopted by local bodies, merit
consideration for adoption. More...
